LAHORE: Civil society on Thursday appreciated the Lahore High Court’s decision to convict the attacker of candlelight vigil organised in memory of martyred governor Salmaan Taseer.
The complainant and Civil Society Network President Abdullah Malik in a statement said that the court’s verdict was a victory of those who stood for rule of law and raised voice against extremism.
He added that the followers of Mumtaz Qadri threatened the civil society members to refrain from pursuing the case but the activists remained committed against those who believe in the use of force.
“A Lahore High Court division bench had already dismissed the appeal of the culprit and maintained the conviction of Anti-Terrorist Court verdict of July 27, 2015,” he said.
Abdullah Malik said that it is a moment of contentment that our efforts have brought the culprits to their logical end and of course.
“It’s a victory for justice and a lesson for those who believe in violence and terrorism. Civil society will never allow the extremists to impose their agenda on gunpoint and we will continue our struggle for a liberal and a moderate society,” he said, adding that we must give a chance to peace as it was the need of the hour.
