RAWALPINDI: There are more than two million glaucoma patients in Pakistan and almost half of them have already lost their eyesight permanently, an awareness session was told on Friday.
Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Executive Director Brig (Retd) Rizwan Asghar, while speaking at an awareness session held in connection with World Glaucoma Week said “the situation is alarming and requires urgent steps to be taken”.
Brig Rizwan Asghar also said that glaucoma is the ‘silent thief’ that steals the sight of thousands of Pakistanis every year.
Regarded as the second major cause of blindness globally, the disease causes the cables in the optic nerve to die off quicker than they are supposed to thus causing blindness.
