KARACHI: Five bodies of those killed in the fire on a ship in Gadani shipbreaking yard yesterday were sent to their native city of Peshawar on Tuesday morning. Labourers informed media that they sent the bodies back to their families at their own expense, and no support was provided in this regard by the company or government.
The deceased were identified as Saeed Khan, Alif Khan, Muhammad Saeed, Sabir and Naimat.
Police informed media that the ship was owned by ex-chairman of the Shipbreaking Yard Association Rizwan Diwan Farooq, who was detained after he fled the spot when the fire first broke out. Over 55 labourers were working on the ship when the fire started.
Officials from the environment department informed media that chemical foam present inside the ship was responsible for the fire. They said that all the combustibles present on the ship need to be removed before work is started. They added that in the case of yesterday’s fire, the foam was not removed which was evident of neglect on part of the authorities.
