ISLAMABAD: The Sindh police have found disgraced former SSP Rao Anwar as the main culprit in the murder of Naqeebullah Mehsud.
Rao Anwar was charged as the main accused in a charge sheet District Central SSP Dr Rizwan Ahmad Khan submitted. The charge sheet carried the information found in the Joint Investigation Team’s (JIT) report which was constituted to probe Naqeebullah’s murder.
The charge sheet holds that according to witnesses and evidence, Rao Anwar was the ‘main player’ in the fake encounter that led to Naqeebullah’s killing, since he was the head of the team which first abducted, and then declared Naqeebullah, Muhammad Ishaq, Muhammad Sabir and Nazar Jan as terrorists.
The charge sheet also reveals that Anwar barely cooperated during the investigation, and deliberately withheld facts and delayed the matter.
The investigation has, however, proved that Anwar was present at the crime scene.
In light of the JIT’s findings, moreover, the police have charged Anwar under offence 7ATA/365-A/302/114/109/201/202/34.
The investigation also revealed that former DSP Qamar Ahmad compromised the evidence at the crime scene and acted as a facilitator to the team involved in staging the fake encounter.
The police are currently pursuing 10 others who were involved in the encounter, and have also revealed that the weapons used in the murder are yet to be recovered.
