LAHORE: Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza of the Lahore High Court on Thursday reserved the verdict on maintainability of a petition seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for their alleged corrupt practices.
A local resident Faisal Naseer had moved the petition. Petitioner’s counsel contended that corruption was rampant in all government institutions without any accountability. He aid that incompetent people had been recruited in different departments and even corrupt people were on the key posts in the government departments.
He held premier Nawaz and the chief minister responsible for the mess. He said corruption was dragging Pakistan towards doomsday. He requested the court to declare both Sharif brothers disqualified.
Separately, LHC Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Thursday sought arguments on a petition challenging appointment of former SC chief jusctice Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui as Sindh governor.
The court asked petitioner Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafree to assist as to how his petition against appointment of Sindh governor was maintainable before the LHC.
Petitioner submitted that Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui was not qualified to be elected as a member of the National Assembly and as such could not be appointed governor. He said that article 207 of the constitution did not allow a judge to assume the office of the governor.
He submitted that the governor was 79-year-old and the constitution did not accept any appointed person in the service of Pakistan in that age. He requested the court to set aside the federal government’s notification of appointing Saeeduz Zaman Sindh governor.
He also requested the court to direct the federal government to appoint a new governor in accordance with article 103 of constitution.
