ISLAMABAD: The accountability court under Justice Mohammad Bashir on Wednesday resumed its proceedings of the Avenfield Properties reference case filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.
Nawaz Sharif along with daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar appeared before the court for the hearing. The court had earlier reserved its verdict on Sharif’s plea to determine the documents submitted by former Joint Investigation Team (JIT) head Wajid Zia, which will be considered as admissible evidence in the final verdict.
The court will announce its verdict today on Sharif’s appeal in the Avenfield case.
Wajid Zia, key witness and former JIT head who is serving presently as the additional director of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), resumed his statement recording previously held on March 20. Zia submitted additional documents regarding Flagship Investment reference, Nawaz’s employment contract and reply of United Arab Emirates’ embassy to the court as evidence.
Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Harris and Maryam Nawaz’s defense counsel Amjad Pervaiz objected to the submitted documents by the prosecution, requesting clarity from the court regarding the submission of documents that will be perceived as evidence. Pervaiz also shed light on the missing pages 235 and 243 from the submitted copies of volume-3 of the documents.
NAB following the verdict on Panama papers case had filed supplementary references against Nawaz and Sharif family last year. The former Prime Minister is accused of corruption, with ongoing reference cases pertaining to Flagship Investments Ltd, Al-Azizia steel mills and Avenfield properties.
