LAHORE: Pakistan’s Oscar winning documentary director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been named as one of the ambassadors of the Violence against Women Centre (VAWC).
According to details, the Punjab government named Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and VAW worker Rubina Shaheen as the two ambassadors for VAWC, which would open on March 7in Multan.
The Punjab government spokesman said Chinoy and Shaheen were picked for the position due to their services in eradicationof gender-based violence.
He further said that the aim of appointing Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Rubina Shaheen was to highlight the issues of mental, physical and economic torture of women on grassroots level.
Country Representative of United Nations Women Jamshaid M Kazi lauded Chinoy and Shaheen’s appointment of VAWC ambassadors and said that they would play an effective role in creating awareness to uplift the status of women.
