RAWALPINDI: A mother allegedly killed her month and a half old baby on Saturday morning in the Civil Lines police station area.
The suspect was arrested by police after a murder case was filed against her on a complaint made by her husband, Mohammad Usman.
The dead body of the baby was later taken to the DHQ Hospital.
The newborn was stabbed with a kitchen knife by her mother, who was living at her father’s house in Tahli Mohri, said the police.
Usman told the police that on coming back home from the market he found his daughter stabbed. He rushed to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where doctors declared the baby dead.
Police Lines SHO Mian Imran confirmed that the suspect was arrested, adding that police moved the deceased from CMH to DHQ hospital and took both parents into custody.
Both the parents were not in a stable mental state, said the police. On questioning the couple, it was revealed that the suspect had previously tried to strangle their daughter.
SHO said, “We did not rely on the husband’s statement, and questioned neighbours and relatives and found that the family had taken the women to spiritual healers for treatment.”
He added, “The police will write to a psychiatrist at Benazir Bhutto Hospital to examine the suspect, to see whether the husband’s claims are accurate while pursuing the case.”
