LAHORE: Ch Zulfiqar Ali of Hamid Khan-led Professional Group has been elected the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) president for the year 2017-18.
He won against his arch-rival candidate Ramzan Sohail Chaudhry of Asma Jahangir-led Independent Group.
According to unofficial results, Ch Zulfiqar bagged 3,365 votes and Ramzan Chaudhry got 2909 votes. Two other candidates for the president’s slot Azar Latif Khan and Sardar Latif Khosa could secure 744 and 641 votes, respectively.
Meanwhile, Rashid Lodhi has been elected the LHCBA vice president by securing 4,419 votes while his rival candidate Chaudhry Muhamamd Saleem succeeded to bag 3,276 votes. Amir Saeed Raan has been elected the bar’s secretary by getting 2,396 votes and Muhammad Zaheer Butt finance secretary, who secured 3,446 votes. Polling was held under strict security measures and only those people, including lawyers, were allowed entries, who were having national identity cards and the LHCBA membership cards.
Personnel of Rangers, Elite Force and police were deployed in and around the LHC building and containers were placed on Mall Road to divert traffic. Law enforcement agencies kept the shops near and around the high court closed. Three suspects were also arrested by police.
