KARACHI: A case of a teacher killing her student and later committing suicide in Karachi has in fact turned out to be another sordid case of ‘honour’ killing, an investigation revealed.
The case pertains to a teacher Nasreen who killed her student Rabia for supposedly not marrying Nasreen’s brother.
The charges of an honour killing were revealed when the state filed a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons which highlighted that the deaths were in fact honour killings.
The FIR also revealed that Rabia’s relatives had promised her hand to a man residing in Hyderabad. Rabia showed reluctance over the marriage, and in response, Rabia’s family asked Nasreen to convince Rabia to marry the person.
The investigation also revealed that Rabia’s relatives had held an illegal jirga prior to the murder as well.
The FIR also highlighted the discrepancies that emerged in the statements Rabia’s relatives recorded.
