LONDON: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz on Sunday said the corruption cases against her family had nothing to do with accountability.
“Whole world knows it is revenge,” Maryam told reporters in London before her departure to Pakistan. She said the Sharif family will test the judicial system by appearing before courts despite all the reservations. She said that the Sharif family respects the law and the constitution and will appear before the court as responsible citizens. “A politician that has nothing to hide does not shy away from anything, which is why we [Safdar and Maryam] are travelling back to the country to respect the court and the law,” she added.
Maryam and her husband Captain (r) Safdar are set to appear in front of the accountability court on October 9, in a hearing of the graft cases that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) drafted against the Sharif family as directed by the Supreme Court in its July 28 Panamagate verdict.
To a question regarding Nawaz Sharif’s re-election as PML-N’s president, she stressed it was party’s democratic right to elect anyone as its leader and that no one should have objection to it. “Things going on in Pakistan for more than one-and-a-half year are in front of everyone now … but PML-N government will complete its tenure despite all hurdles,” she said.
To another question, Maryam said her brothers Hassan and Hussain will also appear before the courts but it was purely up to them to decide about their return to Pakistan. PML-N sources close to the family have said that the brothers will look at the outcome of Monday’s hearing before making their decision about returning to Pakistan.
