KARACHI: In the wake of Naqeebullah Mehsud’s alleged encounter, protesters gathered at Sohrab Goth demanding resignation of Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar on Friday.
The protest turned violent after police officers threw tear gas canisters at the demonstrators, leading to the protesters blocking the Super Highway asking for removal of SSP Rao to ensure transparent investigation into the matter. One protester was badly wounded by a tear gas shell.
Pertaining orders from Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal on Thursday, IG Sindh AD Khawaja established a committee consisting of Inspector General Police (IGP) Counter-terrorism Department (CTD) Sanaullah Abbasi, DIG South and East to probe the alleged ‘encounter’.
SSP Rao Anwar presented evidences related to Naqeebullah’s criminal record before the committee, which are being reviewed by the board. Talking to the media, Anwar reiterated his stance saying that the 27-year-old from South Waziristan was ‘100 percent a terrorist.’
On January 13, Naqeebullah Mehsud was fatally shot during a police raid on a ‘terrorist hideout’ in an alleged ‘encounter’ at Shah Latif town.
