KARACHI: In the fifth bank heist of 2017, Rs 3 million was looted from a private bank located on Maripur Road in the remit of Lyari Town on Tuesday.
A total of six gunmen stormed into the branch of Bank Alfalah situated on Maripur road in the jurisdiction of Karlri Police station and walked away with Rs 3 million, according to police. Kalri Police team with experts from the forensic department and specialized investigation unit reached the site to collect evidence and trace the culprits. The bank staff told the police in their statements that at least 6 gunmen were present; out of these, two overpowered the private security guard posted on duty while one stayed outside for backup support. Three others entered the branch and heldthe staff and customers hostage. The two other who had overpowered the security guard came inside and all five went to the cash counter and safe-room to fill their bags with money before escaping the scene. According to the police, it might be the same gang that was involved in the robbery of a bank in the north Karachi area a few days ago. In both cases, various similarities have been found; in both 6 members were involved and motorcycles were also used. Sindh Inspector General for Police AD Khawaja has ordered the DIG CIA to conduct a detailed inquiry into bank heist instances in specific localities of Karachi and brief him about the measures adopted to combat the crime. He also ordered the concerned officials to present a detailed report about measures adopted for the security of banks as well as shops and public outlets in areas registered as frequently targeted by criminals.
