ISLAMABAD: Federal government has agreed to conduct population census from March 15 next year following the decision of the Supreme Court which directed the government to conduct population census on March 15th 2017.
According to the Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali, the unofficial consultation in the matter has been done and the federal government has also agreed upon it.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) expressed resentment over the government for the delay in carrying out the population census and not finalizing any date. Therefore SC directed the government to conduct population census on March 15, 2017.
It is pertinent to mention that the last census was carried out in 1998 when the population was 132 million It is now believed that the population has crossed the 200 million mark. This makes Pakistan the sixth most populated country in the world.
According to analysts, the census is a politically sensitive issue because it determines the amount of development budget allocated to each of the country’s provinces.
