ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly standing committee on law and justice Tuesday summoned National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal over probe into alleged money laundering by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif.
The NAB chief was ordered to appear before the committee on Wednesday (today) in person to brief the lawmakers on probe into allegations of money laundering against the deposed prime minister. The committee ordered that the officials involved in the investigation process must also accompany the NAB chief.
The committee had taken notice of a point of order raised by PML-N lawmaker Rana Hayat. The committee session will be chaired by PML-N lawmaker Chaudhry Ashraf.
Earlier this month, a press release issued by the NAB had stated that it was looking into allegations that Nawaz Sharif laundered money to the tune of $4.9 billion to India.
The announcement had stirred controversy after it was found to be based on a flawed World Bank report.Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Nawaz Sharif subsequently called for the NAB chairman to either apologise for the blunder or resign.
NAB chairman had, however, responded that the watchdog will continue to probe corruption cases in accordance with the law and the constitution, asserting that days of the ‘untouchable’ were over and that no one was above the law.”It is better that those who have been thinking that they are untouchable should clear this misunderstanding. They can be asked questions, they can be nabbed and they can also be prosecuted as per the law,” he had said.
