ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has on Tuesday rebuked Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over ‘becoming a part of the abusive campaign against Supreme Court (SC)’ that Aitzaz believes former PM Nawaz Sharif has launched.
Talking to media, Aitzaz said it was deplorable that Abbasi had also joined Sharif and his family in disrespecting the apex court. He said that Abbasi shouldn’t be a part of such a campaign since he had taken the oath to protect the sanctity of the very institutions that he had shown disrespect towards.
Aitzaz also opined on the question by Chief Justice of Pakistan in a recent hearing whether a thief could become a party head. He said that the Indian Supreme Court had also asked the same question recently but nobody objected to it.
“But in Pakistan, you say the word ‘thief’ and Maryam would think you’re talking about her father”, he said. “It only means that a guilty conscience needs no accuser”, the senior lawyer asserted.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had recently said in an interview with a private TV channel, when asked about Nawaz’s possible conviction in the corruption cases, that Nawaz Sharif was ready for anything. “There has not been a single piece of evidence brought forward by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to date. But still if the courts want to convict him, it’s their choice. Nawaz is ready”, he said.
The premier had also criticised the use of words like ‘mafia, thieves and dacoits’ for ‘the elected representatives’ in a recent speech, terming them unacceptable.
