LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC), on Tuesday, raised questions regarding the ownership of 18,500-acre land which is being used by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Jahangir Tareen.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice (CJ) Saqib Nisar, heard the petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi seeking the disqualification of Tareen along with PTI Chief Imran Khan over various allegations including the non-disclosure of assets.
During the hearing, Tareen’s counsel Sikander Mohmand told the court that the land was acquired by his client on contract in 2010.
The apex court’s bench ordered Sikander to submit the details about the real owner of the land.
Denouncing the lease agreement presented by the Tareen’s lawyer, the CJ said, “You are relying on cross-checks and not presenting the real record”.
“We want to make sure that while someone else’s name is appearing on papers, Tareen is not the actual owner,” he added.
The court ordered to present the Punjab Land Revenue’s record containing the details of the real owners of the land.
However, the lawyer argued that there is no system in Punjab to check agricultural income, therefore, his client can’t be disqualified on the matter related to the payment of agriculture tax.
