SUKKUR: National Highway and Motorway Police Sukkur have started a campaign against oil tankers, trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles with poor condition of tyres as this condition is considered to be the major cause of accidents on highways.
DIG Nasir Mehmood Satti N-5 South has directed the patrolling parties to take action against vehicles with tyres in bad condition.
In this regard, SSP Motorway Sukkur has ordered to checking of tyres of heavy vehicles. More than twenty two hundred drivers of various categories of vehicles have been penalized with more than Rs 1.1 million penalty while around 212 oil tankers have also been restricted to ply on highways.
He directed the officers to also check public service vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers.
Police patrolling officers would use tread gauge to check old and worn out tyres, brief the drivers not to use such tyres and to replace them if treads would be less than 1.6 millimeters.
The drivers would be advised to keep air pressure according to a standard level, useable spare wheel and tools and get periodic wheel balancing and alignment. Traffic DSPs would personally monitor the campaign in their respective beat areas in this regard.
