A book titled Canals, colonies and class: British policy in the Punjab 1880-1940 written by Centre of Migration, Diaspora and Remittances (CIMRAD) Deputy Director Dr Fareeha Zafar was launched at a ceremony organised by the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (GIDS) on May 24.
Dr Fareeha is a professor at the Lahore School of Economics. She holds a PhD in geography from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK. Present among others were Professor Dr Naved Hamid, Professor Pervaiz Vandal, Dr Faisal Bari and Dr Rashid Amjad. The book, published by the Lahore School of Economics, highlights the construction of the Punjab’s canal network by the British and the extent to which they irrigated and colonised the region remain unmatched in any other part of the world – even today. Distinguished speakers appreciated Dr Fareeha for the historical insights on patron-client relationship, power dynamics, impact of technological change and how that altered irrigation, production patterns and land ownership.
