ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) adjourned on Wednesday the hearing of Interior Minister and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Tallal Chaudhry’s contempt of court case for one day.
Tallal and his attorney appeared in the court where a bench of three members headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal heard the case.
The lawyer demanded more time to present arguments regarding the case.
“We have to carry out the proceedings today,” said Justice Ejaz Afzal. Justice Maqbool Baqir added that the matter was not of individual disrespect but of the institution.
The court approved the request and adjourned the trial till March 15. The Supreme Court passed the charge sheet against the PML-N leader to additional attorney general and asked him to review its transcript.
On February 2, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar had taken a suo motu notice of Tallal Chaudhry’s ‘contemptuous speeches’ against the court.
The notice was taken after the minister disparaged Panama Case verdict on various occasions. Tallal also compared the judges with idols that were placed in Kaaba, in Jaranwala rally in January. Tallal allegedly urged PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif to overthrow the judges. He was reported to have said there was no hope of justice till these judges were sitting in the courts.
Previously, Supreme Court accused Danyal Aziz, Federal minister for Privatisation in contempt of court case under Article 204 of the constitution and Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003.
The SC stated that the minister tried to scandalize the judiciary and impede the judicial proceedings. Daniyal Aziz pleaded innocence to the charges brought against him by the Supreme Court.
